Do I Stink or Smell Sweet?
2 Corinthians 2: 14-17 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in TRIUMPH in CHRIST, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.
First things first; let’s thank God that we are trophies of Christ’s victory! We are showcasing the victory Jesus won by being a: Heaven bound, truth speaking, love living, commandment obeying Child of God.
So, Did you know that every person carries a smell? I’m not talking about a natural smell, or a certain perfume or shampoo. I am talking about a spiritual fragrance. Good or bad. Stinky or sweet smelling. Paul said that as a Christian we spread and make evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God EVERYWHERE! That means when people walk by you it’s like walking through the doors of Bath and Body Works (a perfume/body soap store). BOOM! They are hit with the fragrance of YOUR knowledge of God. That means if you know God as a God of love, they will smell Love. You know God as a joy giver they will smell joy. And you know what? People around you aren’t the only ones smelling you. That’s right, the fragrance you’re carrying is drifting right up to our Heavenly Father. The words in the scripture say that your fragrance (as a Christian) exhales Christ into God’s nose and we know how beautiful Jesus smells to us, imagine how He smells to God.
Paul says we have a CHOICE. We can smell like DEATH (a fatal odor of doom) OR we can smell like LIFE (a fresh and living fragrance). Then Paul goes on to remind us that we are not like those shortchanging or altering the message of God’s Word but with a pure motive we are speaking the truest, fullest message of Christ that we know and we are doing this in the very presences of God our Father.
So I urge you today; take a deep breath, smell yourself and see if you are giving off that fresh life scent all over you and also be aware of those around you, to see how they smell. As you stay aware of your spiritual senses, God will open them so you can witness Christ to them and help them to accept Him and be a sweet smelling fragrance too
